The clinical and pathological findings of systemic mycoses in 3 sheep implanted with cardiovascular devices are reported. Two Suffolk ewes implanted with Penn State electric left ventricular assist device experienced sudden increases in device powerconsumption and aortic outlet cannula pressures prior to death; events which correlated with a full or partial obstruction of the outflow tract from the assist device. The 3rd sheep died 88 days after implantation of a Bjork-Shiley Convexo-Concave mitral valve, after developing progressive cough and tachypnoea. Pathological examination revealed thrombus formation in all 3 sheep. Periodic acid-Schiff stained sections of thrombi from all 3 animals contained fungal hyphae; Mucor sp. was cultured from onesheep and Aspergillus fumigatus from another.
