The animal models for the human hepatitis viruses have been extremely important for the advances we have seen in the studies of these agents over the past several decades, mainly because during most of those years, most of the human hepatitis agents were not culturable in vitro. I am going to give you an overview of the animal models for the human hepatitis viruses, and then tell you about two unusual animal models that have been recently described, the rodent and swine models for hepatitis E virus. I'm also going to describe a very well-confirmed and important animal model, the chimpanzee model for hepatitis C virus.
