"Lean" is increasingly embraced by manufacturers as a strategic program because of its dramatic ability to reduce costs, improve agility, speed throughput, and increase responsiveness to customer demand. It is a transformative approach to managing the flow of production, in that work is not "pushed" into the plant by a schedule tied to a forecast, but "pulled" by a downstream signal - be it a Kanban signal from another workstation, or ultimately, actual demand from a customer order.
