Shortsighted thinking may be the real impediment to Lean

I'm back on my lean manufacturing crusade again - working with several companies in terms of the adoption of lean, and more important, the use of technology in lean scenarios. Frankly, I'm still intrigued at how many lean initiatives remain completely outside the corporate IT world. On the heels of a speech I gave, critiquing IT s role in the lean arena, I participated in a survey on lean manufacturing among European manufacturers. The survey, sponsored by enterprise vendor QAD and conducted by AMR Research, reveals a couple of key points. Not surprisingly, the data shows manufacturers - driven largely by cost pressures - continue to focus on lean practices throughout their operations. What is striking is the apparent challenge in making it stick. Even though we keep seeing references to lean moving into the back office, the reality is that in manufacturing, where lean clearly has its genesis, companies still struggle to standardize and technology-enable lean.
