Companies today operate in an environment where the 20th century notion of the supply chain is being supplanted by that of the 21st century business network. The logic: thanks to advances in computing, telecommunications, and logistics, over-reliance on large, self-sufficient, centrally located, company-owned facilities can increasingly be a handicap. Instead, multi-company collaboration and demand-driven digital networks now have a competitive edge. Business -networks allow sharing of information and processes across companies and continents. As a result, configurable business and manufacturing processes join together manufacturers, suppliers, service providers, and customers.
