With the right approach, flexibility can be achieved without negatively influencing quality and/or output. Most flexible machine cells are acquired precisely because they are capable of a high degree of flexibility. Such cells are configured with identically tooled machines, duplicate fixtures, and multiple pallets. The intention is that any pallet/fixture can be loaded on any machine. But, in reality, while the potential for a great deal of flexibility is available, very little flexibility is actually utilized. The reason for this limited use of flexibility is simply that maintaining quality is more important to users than maximizing the number of alternative paths available in a flexible machining cell. A path is a combination of part number, pallet number, and the sequence of machine numbers for each operation. As the number of paths increase, so does the quality plan's complexity.
