摘要

Mechanical fasteners, which require holemaking and installation operations on the shop floor, are the primary means of assembling aerospace products. Can bonding ever replace fasteners? Bonded joints in aerospace structures have the potential for significant performance and service advantages over traditionally fastened structures. The main benefits are in the creation of a more unitized structure by eliminating fasteners and reducing part count. Eliminating fasteners avoids the secondary design requirements driven by these features, allowing improved joint geometry in the form of reduced component thickness and more efficient load paths. Similarly, the lack of fastener holes, and the distributed nature of bonded load transfer, eliminates many of the stress concentrations that drive fatigue and related progressive deterioration.
