In Europe, where high-end manufacturing companies are looking for accurate, reliable, and maintenance-free machine tools offering fast changeover, programming, and setup, industrial robot technology is regarded as offering a flexible and affordable solution. The EU co-funded COMET consortium (COponents and METhods for adaptive control of robots) is creating a solution with robots of any brand fitted with an innovative plug-and-produce controller unit. The 30-month COMET project, which kicked off in September 2010, involves 14 technical partners from eight European countries, coordinated by partner Delcam plc (Birmingham, UK).
