An experiment was carried out during the period from April to June, 1994 in a plastic greenhouse of Kyoto University to study the responses of 28 chickpea cultivars to water stress. Two treatments were applied to plants, i.e. control and stress. Water stress reduced leaf area at 35 and 50 days after sowing (DAS), leaf numbers per plant at 35 days after sowing, plant height at 30, 40, 50, and 65 DAS, dry weight of root and shoot. Leaf area was significantly reduced by water stress treatment. The degree of reduction was very high in the variety V_9 (ICCV 88202), V_(10) (ICCN 12464) and V_(27) (Dharmashala-2) and the reduction was minimum in cultivars V_2 (ICC 10448), V_(13) (BCL 155), V_(22) (Bheema) and V_(23) (Hyprosola). Leaf area was highest invariety V_(22) (Bheema) in both the treatments. Genotypes V_2 (ICC 10448), V_(12) (BCL 199), V_(31) (BCL 155), V_(25) (Sreenagar-2) and V_(28) (Ahamedpur local) did not show significant differences between control and stress treatments on the whole. Variety V_(16) (BCL 372) showed the longest stress period (23 days) among the tested varieties. The best performing varieties are ICC 10448, BCL 155, Bheema and hyprosola among the tested cultivars. Further study would be needed with those cultivars.
