In 1984 the Guangdong-based Jianlibao Group developed and commercialised China's first sports drink. Named after the company, the brand achieved stellar success in the late '80s and early '90s with annual sales exceeding 650 million dollar (483 million EUR). But towards the end of the last decade the company lost its Midas touch and had rollercoastered until two years ago when Jianlibao's core beverage business was bought by Uni-President.Taiwan's biggest food and beverage company. WEI DENG chronicles the history of China's third-biggest soft drink brand.
