Understanding and following the law is important in any profession. Understanding the and the laws that apply to wildlife situations in the landscape is a must for the modern landscape/ turfgrass manager. The laws pertaining to wildlife are complex, somewhat confusing and poorlyunderstood by many in the landscape/turfgrass industry. Most of the statutes and regulations areto protect wildlife. Failure to follow these laws can be expensive and create unpleasant legal situations. Most wild birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians are considered wildlife and are protected by state law. Federal laws also protect some types of wildlife. Knowing how a particular wildlife species is classified is the first step in determining which laws apply to various situations.
