Using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, data can be processed to produce a regional land use environmental-risk grid of New York State (NYS); this grid illustrates the potential of chemical utilization and associated health risks for various land use classifications. A Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code environmental-risk database (Hillenbrand and Eckman, in press) was used in combination with a Dunn and Bradstreet facility data layer to create a facility point coverage that was environmentally risked by SIC code. GIS summarization analysis of the environmentally risked facility coverage within the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Multi-Resolution Land Classification (MRLC) grid yielded a total risk value for each land use classification. This value was divided by the total area of each land use classification to yield an average SIC code environmental-risk value per cubic meter for each land use classification. These values allowed the construction of a NYS land use environmental-risk grid. This grid assesses a. regionally scaled potential to introduce contaminants to the environment in NYS.
