In a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Anadarko pointed to a "force majeure" clause in its contract for the rig, the Ocean Monarch. Anadarko added that the clause allows it cancel the contract because of natural and unavoidable disasters. A minority owner of BP's Macondo well, Anadarko reports it has also filed a lawsuit against Diamond Offshore seeking a declaratory judgment that it has the authority to cancel the contract. Under the contract, Anadarko would have paid $440,000 per day for the Ocean Monarch from early August through mid-March 2013. The deepwater rig can operate in about 10,000 feet of water. Diamond Offshore has not responded to Anadarko's claims.
