Two groups -- Food & Water Watch and Consumer Watchdog -- have challenged the report, claiming the safest alternative is to turn away from fossil fuels like natural gas. State officials have barred Southern California Gas from refilling the underground storage site until the facility has been declared safe to operate. The four agencies issued a joint statement defending an analysis they did as necessary to identify short-term risks to reliable energy service and prepare for contingencies, 'not to justify the continued operation of Aliso Canyon.' The site has remained closed to commercial use since a well ruptured and began venting in October. The well was finally brought under control in February, but not before venting almost 100,000 tons of methane into the atmosphere.
