A new type of liquid crystal display (LCD), capable of maintaining a 3D image, without power, has been developed. The device detailed in a recent Optics Letters paper [1], an optically rewritable LCD (ORWLCD), contains no electrodes to switch the image, unlike a conventional LCD. The display is instead optically addressed by flashing a desired image onto it. The device is bi-stable and will maintain an image without power, thus making it ideal for low-energy applications such as signage.
