The corrosive power of pure molten aluminum is so strong that even 100 percent alumina refractories are prone to wear to varying degrees by the liquid metal. Among the several classes of refractories, low cement aluminum silicate refractory castables have shown to be cost effective when applied to aluminum furnace linings. In this work, using a procedure similar to the Alcoa 72 hour cup test, 60wt percent Al_2O_3 low cement refractory castable containing small additions of either Al_2TiO_5 or BaAl_2Si_2O_8 was exposed to a molten aluminum alloy LG-6061, and corrosion resistance was evaluated. It was found that the addition of BaAl_2Si_2O_8 greatly improved corrosion resistance and lowered bath contamination when compared to Al_2TiO_5.
