Increasing globalization of the markets and growing quality awareness among customers are imposing ever more stringent quality demands on wire rope manufacturers and on used wire ropes. These wire ropes generally consist of unalloyed carbon steel with a carbon content of around 0.4 to 0.9%, and are manufactured from previously hot rolled wire rod using a cold drawing process. Local defects may appear along the whole of the wire manufacturing value chain which can occur independently of the achievement of continuous quality. Fig. 1 illustrates an example of this type of extensive surface defect.
