Variability in different cutting management environments in Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.).

The variability, heritability and expected genetic gain of lucerne (Medicago sativa) were studied based on pooled observations under different cutting schedules. The study comprised 81 germplasm materials of lucerne including 55 collections from different parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat, 25 collections from existing germplasm material maintained at Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute, Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, India and one standard check, RL88. Observations were recorded at the time of 50% flowering in the first cut and in subsequent cuts at one month interval for quantitative and quality traits, namely: plant height, primary basal branches, stem girth, number of nodes, internode length, plant spread, leaf weight, stem weight, leaf stem ratio, green forage and dry matter yields. Analysis of variance revealed that adjusted as well as unadjusted mean squares due to genotypes were largely significant for all traits on pooled main basis. Variances for number of nodes per plant, stem girth, plant spread were significant at few cutting environments. High genotypic coefficient of variation was observed for the various traits like green and dry fodder yield per plant, leaf and stem weight per plant, protein content, and leaf stem ratio per plant. Phenotypic coefficient of variation was slightly higher than their corresponding genotypic coefficient of variation. The high heritability coupled with high genetic advance was observed for green fodder yield and stem weight.
