The field investigation was conducted during three consecutive years of 1989-90, 1990-91 and 1991-92 at NRCAF, Jhansi to find out the effect of three alley cropping systems Viz., pigeonpea, shevari and subabul with or without the use of pruned foliage as forage or green manure and three N levels (0, 45 and 90 kg/ha) to intercropped forage sorghum on the productivity of succeeding gram and fertility status of soil. Mean data over three years revealed that residual crop of gram under pigeonpea recorded the highest values of growth and yield attributes followed by subabul and minimum with shevari. However, alleys pruned for forage or for soil application did not significantly influence the growth and yield of gram but both the treatments proved significantly superior than no pruning. Nitrogen doses from 0-90 kg/ha to preceding crop of sorghum could not significantly affect the growth and yield of gram in any of the years. At the termination of the trial no pruning treatment recorded the highest values of organic carbon, available nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Increased N levels upto 90 kg/ha recorded increasing organic carbon and nitrogen contents but lower values of available phosphorus and potassium in the soil.
