Effect of sulphur application on yield and quality of fodder sorghum in Bundelkhand soils

The study was conducted to assess the effect of sulphur levels of 0,15, 30 & 45 kg/ha on yield and quality of fodder sorghum. The result showed that the application of sulphur @ 30 kg/ha gave significantly higher green and dry fodder yield of sorghum. However, the response to added sulphur was maximum (126.0 kg/kg S green and 35.9 kg/kg S dry fodder) in coarse textured red soil followed by fine textured black soil (88.8 kg/kg S green and 25.9 kg/kg S dry fodder). The sulphur removal was also higherat 30 kg S/ha in red soil (85.33 gm/kg added S) than in black soil (79.33 gm/kg added S). As regards fodder quality is concerned it was improved more at 45 kg S/ha over control recording increased protein (9.32 & 9.64 percent) and S:Zn ratio (22.7 & 23.8) and lowered N:S ratio (15.59 & 1.4.53) in fodder grown under red and black soil, respectively. The value of protein, S:Zn and N:S in fodder receiving no sulphur was 8.82 percent, 19.50 & 17.63 under red soil and 9.16 percent, 21.8 & 15.98 in black soil, respectively.
