摘要

Prosopis juliflora (Swartz) DC. commonly known as 'Vilayati Kikar' is one of the important species for afforestation in arid and semi-arid areas of India. It is a light demander, fast growing and extremely drought hardy plant. Being leguminous in nature, it plays an important role in building up soil fertility (Singh and Singh, 1993) and reclamation of high pH soils. It is valued mainly as a firewood crop having calorific value 4,700 Kcal kg~(-1) (Hocking, 1993). Almost as important as its firewoodvalue is the usefulness of its pods as fodder and food. Yield of pods starts by the second or third year after planting and can amount to 20-40 t ha~(-1) yr~(-1) (von Maydell, 1986). The species is relevant to the rural communities to meet their bonafide needs of fuel & fodder, due to its wide adaptability and fast growth. Generally, the plant quality is poor, therefore, it is desirable to screen the naturally available genetic variation, to utilize the best material for reforestation for maximum productivity and future breeding work.
