Two field experiments were conducted at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana during rabi 1994-95 to 1996-97 to find out the response of oats to levels and time of nitrogen application under different cutting management. In Experiment-I, first cut at 90 days after sowing + second cut at 50 per cent flowering (H_3) and single cut at 50 per cent flowering (H_3) gave significantly higher green fodder (432 and 437 q/ha. respectively) over first cut at 70 DAS + second cut at 50 per cent flowering (H_1) by a margin of 15.8 and 17.2 per cent, respectively. Whereas, significantly higher dry matter yield (92 q/ha) was recorded with H_3 over H_1 (63 q/ha) and H_3 (72 q/ha). The crude protein content at 50 per cent flowering was lowest 8.8 to 10.4 per cent (irrespective of the treatment) as compared to 13.3 per cent at 70 DAS and 11.9 per cent at 90 DAS. The green fodder and dry matter yields increased significantly up to the highest dose of 240 kg N/ha (522 q green fodder and 94 q dry matter/ha). Nitrogen application also increased the crude protein content from 8.4 to 12.8 per cent. In Experiment-II, nitrogen applied to both cuttings (half to first cut and half to second cut) produced 7.0 percent higher green fodder yield (477 q/ha) over full dose ofnitrogen applied to first cut. Similar trend was observed in dry matter yield. In the first cutting, crude protein content was higher when full dose of nitrogen was applied to first cutting, whereas in the second cutting, crude protein content was higherwhen nitrogen was applied to both cuttings.
