The 9.4 km long Katzenberg Tunnel is being constructed at the southernmost end of the new/upgraded railway line between Karlsruhe and Basel on the edge of the Black Forest and is due to enter service in December 2012. It is to form a section of the TEN trunk route between Rotterdam and Genoa and is intended for both high-speed passenger trains and freight trains.
