In this article, a methodology to classify railway networks on the basis of their traffic composition and their economic profitability is proposed. The application of the proposed methodology enables the correlation between traffic composition and economic profitability to be shown, and then conclusions to be drawn regarding the effect of traffic composition on the economic profitability of a respective railway network. The proposed methodology, with some adaptations, can also be applied to railway corridors.
