摘要

One undesirable consequence of cranial radiation therapies used in the treatment of a range of neural tumors is the subsequent variable degrees of cognitive dysfunction [1]. The biologic basis for such cognitive deficits is currently unclear. With the realization that specific regions of the adult CNS, such as the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, retain extensive germinal zones, it has been proposed that radiation causes an inhibition of neu-rogenesis in this region, which results in cognitive impairment. Consistent with this hypothesis, experimental modulation of hippocampal neurogenesis has been correlated with cognitive capacity in a number of animal models.
