Householders must face the consequences of a "pretty much inevitable" increase in domestic air conditioning by paying more for their energy, according to a leading energy expert. Talking on Radio 4's Today programme, Dr Dieter Helm, fellow of New College Oxford and a member of the Government's Task Force on Sustainable Development, said: "As people get wealthier, first they wanted their houses warmer and we had the switch to central heating, and now they want to take the benefits of their wealth in cooler houses in the summer. "The real issue is making sure that people face the consequences of the pollution that this will cause and also making sure that our networks and our energy system are up to supplying that." He said that the country needed to generate our energy increasingly from non-carbon sources and move away from coal and gas.
