BubR1 is one member of the Spindle Assembly Checkpoint (SAC) family of proteins. Two recent papers have taken an antisense approach to explore its role in female mammalian meiosis. They add to the body of evidence confirming a surveillance role of the SAC in female meiosis 1, challenging the idea that high aneuploidy incidence in oocytes is due lack of SAC function. Interestingly they reveal some unexpected insights into a SAC-independent BubRI function.
