摘要

This is a significant year for ESTRO. It was founded in 1980 and held its first conference in London in 1982, so the recent set of three linked meetings also held in London in May 2011, was billed as a 30th anniversary celebration. At the same time the Society's journal, Radiotherapy and Oncology, founded in 1983, has reached its 100th volume [1]. This year too, ESTRO changed its name from ESTRO: European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, to ESTRO: European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology [2]. Therefore it is an opportune time to take stock of European radiation oncology, as well as of the contribution and achievements of the journal. Recent issues have done this for advances in the whole field of radiation oncology [1] and also specifically for molecular and translational radiation biology/oncology [3]. This issue contains a special commentary on the current status of brachytherapy [4], whilst this editorial considers physics and technology, looking back as well as forwards. We hope at this time we can be forgiven for indulging in some reflective comments.
