Leveraging clinical performance by technological excellence - The case of particle therapy.

摘要

Decades of progress in radiation oncology has aimed at improving the therapeutic ratio by confining the radiation dose to that of the target volume. This progress has to a large extent been technology led and relies on (1) advanced imaging for better target volume identification and delineation, (2) better immobilization, image guidance and gating techniques allowing reduced margins and (3) improved radiation delivery techniques, of which particle therapy can be regarded as the most advanced radiation delivery technology yet developed. The interest in proton and particle therapy has therefore been enhanced in recent years, as also apparent from the increasing number of papers on this topic which has recently been published in Radiotherapy & Oncology [1-9].
