The discovery that residence in a common cytoplasm is sufficient to induce synchrony in the events of the nuclear division cycle provided early evidence that diffusible cyto-plasmic factors controlled nuclear events associated with the cell division cycle (Rao et al., Nature 1970). Although this has become a well-accepted principle in cell biology, it is by no means universal. The lessons learned from heterokaryons of mammalian cells and other naturally occurring syncitia break down in some multinucleate filamentous fungi, such as Neurospora crassa and Ashbya gossypii, the subject of the paper by Nair found in a previous issue of Cell Cycle. In those fungi, nuclei residing in the same cytoplasm exhibit independence, suggesting a failure of diffusible factors arising from transcripts produced in one nucleus to influence the nuclear division cycle in its neighbors.
