Regulation of gene-specific transcription in eukaryotes is controlled by combinatorial arrangements and concerted functions of various short DNA sequence elements located around the transcription start site (TSS) of genes (promoters) as well as in distal regulatory regions (e.g., enhancers) that are recognized by diverse sequence-specific DNA-binding proteins. The availability of completely sequenced genomes has promoted efforts to decipher by molecular and bioinformatics approaches the genome-wide location and combinatorial assortment of some of these well-characterized transcription regulatory sequences and cognate regulatory factors.
