The application of monitored natural recovery (MNR) for contaminated sediments has received much less attention than monitored natural attenuation (MNA) for contaminated soil and groundwater. This is likely due to the fact that sediments present unique challenges for monitoring and addressing the issue of permanence. Further, the implementation of MNR is often difficult because the science and methodologies for evaluating its appropriateness and effectiveness have not been fully structured or developed. However, for many contaminated sediments sites, the use of MNR as a focused option for source control or for hotspot remediation could provide considerable environmental and cost benefits compared to more aggressive remedies such as capping, dredging, and the use of novel amendments.
