Obesity has been causally linked to an array of human diseases, including metabolic syndrome, type II diabetes, diverse cardiovascular disorders, hepatosteatosis and an increased propensity to develop cancer.'Although obesity is considered a severe problem, very little is known about the molecular mechanisms causing the associated degeneration of organs and finally death.Glucose levels have been traditionally considered responsible for the degeneration and death of insulin-producing beta-cells and, recently, also, free fatty acids (FFA), which are present in high concentration in plasma during obesity, have been involved in the development of diabetes.
