摘要

Hispanics/Latinos are the largest and fastest growing major demographic group in the United States, and comprised 16% (50.5 million/310 million) of the US population in 2010 [1]. Hispanic ethnicity refers to a homogenous population of individuals with origins in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Cuba, Central and South America (typically excluding Brazil and Portugal). Significant health disparities exist among these populations. The health of the Hispanic population differs from other ethnic groups in that there are higher rates of chronic health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, and obesity. The increased incidence of chronic conditions may be related to behavioral factors such as diet and exercise or may be caused by environmental factors like pesticide or sun exposure. Recent research suggests epigenetic factors, may play a role [2, 3].
