The heterochronic genes of the worm C. elegans were once thought to be oddballs, a Felliniesque cast of characters that are interesting but not directly relevant to the wider world of developmental biology.1 How wrong that second part turned out to be. The most famous members of these genes, whose unifying feature is their involvement in developmental timing, encode first-known microRNAs (miRNAs). Not only are these miRNAs key actors in a completely novel mechanism of regulating development, but they are widely conserved, having orthologs in mammals
