p38MAPK, a member of the mitogen-activated protein kinase superfamily, plays a role in the stress response induced by ultraviolet (UV) radiation, osmotic shock, and proinflamma-tory stimuli such as lipopolysaccharide. Of particular interest is its involvement in mitotic progression. In the Xenopus oocyte, p38 is required for meiotic transition from G2 to M and for metaphase arrest.12 p38 has also been shown to be essential for the spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) in somatic cells such as NIH3T3 and HeLa cells.
