Accurate chromosome segregation during mitosis is essential for the maintenance of genomic stability. An important event prior to mitotic entry is the decatenation of sister chromatids, which are highly entangled as a consequence of DNA replication. The decatenation checkpoint monitors the status of chromosome decatenation and delays entry into mitosis until the chromosomes have been sufficiently disentangled. This special feature of Cell Cycle highlights recent advances in our understanding of the biology and significance of the decatenation checkpoint
