Pulverized Coal Injection has been implemented for the first time in Germany in 1985 on BF4 in Hamborn. PCI has now become the most wide spread measure to substitute for coke in the iron making process of blast furnaces. Indeed, it affords the best opportunity to operate at low fuel cost, with reduced coke rate and high blast furnace productivity. Coke rates of 300 kg/thm and injection rates of 175 kg/thm are now achieved on the blast furnaces of ThyssenKrupp Stahl AG. The annual pulverized coal capacity of TKS is currently of 2.4 Mt. Advanced injection systems, preheated pulverized coal in particular, are presented and discussed. They have made it possible to operate with coke rates below 280 kg/thm and injection rates of 190 kg/thm in Schwelgern.
