摘要

Tension gastrothorax is a life-threatening complication of diaphragmatic rupture or hiatus hernia. Diaphragmatic rupture with abdominal viscera herniation occurs in approximately 3% of cases of abdominal trauma; with a 2:1 ratio of penetrating to blunt trauma. It is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Successful management of this serious condition requires correct diagnosis, and prompt treatment, with minimal complications. Emergency relief of tension gastrothorax by needle thoracocentesis, or erroneous treatment by tube thoracostomy, is fraught with complications such as bowel perforation, sepsis, faecothorax, empyema, acute lung injury and respiratory failure. This is a case report of life-threatening tension gastrothorax that was immediately and successfully relieved by gastroscopic decompression.
