A review of structural equation modeling and its use in library and information studies

Structural equation modeling (SEM) is a family of multivariate statistical analysis techniques such as confirmatory factor analysis, observed variable path analysis, and latent variable path analysis (Sorbom, 2001). SEM is well accepted for testing research hypotheses in the social sciences including business, sociology, psychology, and education (Muller, 1996; Schumacker & Lomax, 2004). Thompson (2000) stated that it would be difficult to locate recent issues of social science journals in which some SEM applications were not reported (p. 227). In recent years, library and information science (LIS) journals have published articles that cite SEM as the research method. In general, however, this statistical method has had limited application in LIS research, possibly due to LIS researchers' unfamiliarity with it as a quantitative analytic tool. But interdisciplinary LIS studies may require researchers to use this technique to seek answers to questions that might contain multiple variables, for example, when assessing their service qualities, evaluating library service impact on user satisfaction, or justifying organizational needs for more financial resources.
