Within the Gettysburg-Newark section of the Piedmont in Pennsylvania lie mineral resources that are both important and interesting. Several of these localities, such as the Cornwall Iron mine in Lebanon County and the French Creek mine in Chester County, have yielded world-class mineral specimens. Although Valley quarry in Gettysburg is not one of these occurrences, the operation has produced an assortment of fine specimens during the past forty years. This article summarizes nineteen years of dedicated research on this particular quarry. Although Hoff (1978) wrote about the quarry's mineralogy, our efforts have produced results that warrant publication. Valley quarry is located about 2.2 miles southeast of Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania, along U.S. 97. The locality was opened in 1934 by John S. Teeter and Sons, Inc., which sold it to Campbell Company in 1959. Valley Quarries of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, bought the property in 1985, and the company has worked the quarry for aggregate to the present time. During its early years, the quarry produced some fine stilbite and natrolite specimens. In the mid-1970s, an iron-copper skarn zone was encountered that produced outstanding specimens of epidote, orthoclase, bornite, djurleite, and chalcocite (Hoff 1978). Teeter's quarry is listed in the classic publication Mineral Collecting in Pennsylvania (Geyer, Smith, and Barnes 1976). Veteran collectors still refer to this locality as Teeter's quarry. As the quarry has advanced both northward and eastward, occasional "pockets" of micro- and hand-sized specimens have been encountered.
