The Japanese producers of sintered neodymium-iron-boron magnets - Hitachi Metals, Shinetsu Chemicals and TDK - face a difficult situation. Prices of rare earth raw materials are strong, but automobile manufacturers are reluctant to accept higher magnet prices as they aim to raise the market share held by electric and hybrid electric vehicles. Japanese prices of imported neodymium peaked at 47.5 US dollars/kg in March 2008, a rise from 8.5 US dollars/kg at the beginning of 2005, although they softened to 43 US dollars/kg in May. Prices of dysprosium increased from 51.3 US dollars/kg to 158 US dollars/kg over the same period.
