摘要

OA is a progressive disease that affects all joint structures. OA is not a unique disease, but is a heterogeneous syndrome with different clinical phenotypes that continuously evolve, eventually leading to common clinical manifestations. The clinical expression of a certain phenotype depends on the main underlying pathway and predominant joint tissue involved at a point in time [1]. Moreover, OA should also be examined as a joint disease along with other comorbidities. These comorbidities are not exclusive and several of them may arise in the same patient, modulating the OA process. Although our goal is to have clear OA phenotypes, all these factors make appropriate classification and identification of phenotypes of OA difficult in clinical studies or in clinical practice. Thus a better subgrouping of OA is important, especially when several processes may overlap and various tissues are dominant during different phases of the disease.
