摘要

A study of genetically modified rice trials in China, co-authored by UC Davis agricultural economist Scott Rozelle, shows that rural farmers obtain significant health and economic benefits from working with GM rice. Farmers of non-genetically modifiedrice are found to buy and use 8 to 10 times as much pesticide on their crops and subsequently experience adverse health effects. The conclusions this study makes about farmer welfare are critical to China's expected decision to commercialize GM staple crops. China, with over a billion citizens, has the production and export power to mass-produce the world's first GM staple food crop, and in doing so force other countries to compete.
