While the farm-gate price of natural rubber in India is about 90%, that of rubber wood is as low as 27%-30 %. This is because the contractors who act as middle men offer very low price to growers for aged trees. The felling" of trees is a costly affair in view of high labour and transportation costs. Introduction of mechanisation in tree felling as prevalent in countries like Malaysia would reduce the cost of replantation and ensure better farm-gate price to the growers. As value-added rubber wood products become popular, farmers will get higher price for their timber.
