The world needs more rubber and NR is the natural choice, provided it is available. Global warming, climate change and ecological concerns strain NR production. It is estimated that for every one degree rise in temperature, there would be about 15% fall in NR productivity. During the past 50 years, the maximum temperature at the Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII) campus in Kottayam has risen by 2.6°C and minimum temperature by 1.5°C while the annual rainfall decreased by 375 mm. Field productivity of NR increased substantially during the same period.
