What a futures market does would determine whether futures trading is a boon or bane. Futures trading would be a boon if it serves its vital functions of price discovery, risk covering and price stabilisation. On the reverse, it would be a bane if it breeds manipulations leading to a typical price movement with no causal link to fundamentals. In India, in the context of the growing process of market integration, futures trading in commodities is perceived as a competitive tool to supplement and support physical trading.
