Flying cars, vacations in space, robot maids—all of these were visions of a promised future that never came to pass. On the other hand, almost no one predicted that millions of Americans would own a pocket-sized communication/computing device equipped with significantly more processing power than any Apollo rocket carried in voyaging to the moon. When considering what the electric utility industry might look like in the year 2042, just 30 years from now, it pays to keep in mind the lesson of the smartphone: Technologies that upend the established way of doing things most often come at us from unexpected angles. For not-for-profit, member-owned electric co-ops, these changes could be anything from revolutionary new means of generation to profound shifts in the way consumers interact with their electricity supplier. It could mean a world where energy is cheap and plentiful and the established grid primarily serves as a backup system."The technological advances we're going to see will fundamentally alter our industry," predicts Martin Lowery, NRECA executive vice president of external affairs. "Once you're on the path we're on today, you're on it forever. It's an approach of continual improvement."
