By promising a way for utilities to use existing electric infrastructure and generation capacity more efficiently—and ensure that data communications, translation, dispatch, and storage keep pace with operational demands—smart meters have become allthe rage. But just what constitutes such a device? Jim Brackett, meter application engineer at GE Energy (gepower.com), defines a "smart meter" as one with "microprocessor-based systems capable of reporting calculated information directly from electronic data registers stored in memory chips."
