By combining geographic information systems and the Internet, electric co-ops can provide staff, consumers, and the general public with easy-to-follow updates regarding outages and other important projects. For electric co-ops, geographic informationsystems (GIS) remain powerful tools—they can leverage and feed data to different applications, such as outage management systems (OMS), and then blend the "statistical stew" with electronic maps to paint a picture of what's happening with an entire distribution system. Now, some co-ops are enhancing GIS value by using the World Wide Web to provide collected information to wider audiences.
